Thank you for your interest in the Bass Coast Art Installation Grant program 2022.
Bass Coast Festival is an immersive, artistic experience. Since the inception of our Art Grant program in 2012 we have invited artists to exhibit at our event through the program giving out over $160,000 in grants. The art exhibit expands over the entire site creating a cohesive artistic experience for attendees. Our goal is to enhance our festival with compelling environments created with the support of the Art Grant funding. We support and showcase visual artists, from virtuosos to those just beginning their professional careers. Please read the application thoroughly before submitting to ensure your art meets the criteria we’re looking for.
We’re seeking the following:
- Innovative three dimensional art
- Designs that are interactive with the viewer
- Installations that light up at night
- Installations that initiate profound conversation
- Designs that create an environment that encourages viewers to gather
Mandatory Criteria
- create unique and innovative concepts.
- incorporates natural elements and/or repurposed materials.
- include interesting lighting design
- include a seating area
- build structurally sound designs, built to the B.C. code.
- use weather resistant materials.
- carry liability insurance on overhead or inherently risky installations
Art may be pre-existing or in the design phase when submitting your application.
VERY IMPORTANT INFO:
- No pop up tents, if you use a tent it must be disguised
- No rental fencing
- No tarps, unless disguised
- Art that does not match the description provided in the application or offer may be asked to be removed from the site and the grant revoked.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Bass Coast is a 19 plus event and photo ID is required to enter the festival site. This includes all presenters. No animals are permitted on-site before, during or after the event.
WEATHER
Prepare for all weather. We may experience extreme heat, torrential rain, severe thunderstorms and high winds. It is your responsibility to make sure your art is prepared for the elements. The art exhibit areas are open & opulent playscapes. As such, we don't allow pop-up tents or unsightly tarps to be hung above art installations. Make sure your art is able to survive the elements without any clunky or plain looking weatherproofing interrupting the atmosphere. Be creative.
SAFETY
If your art is going to be hung in the air or shackled to the ground, please make sure it is SECURE. If your art is airborne, you may require a rigger on your team. If it is in the ground and could be a hazard by falling over or getting caught in the wind, get rebar stakes. If you have any safety concerns during setup, please let us know and we will do our best to assist you. We reserve the right to remove or take down without notice any art that is a safety concern.
INSURANCE
All Art Grant recipients may need to add Bass Coast to their liability insurance depending on the Art Grant design. A minimum of must have at least 2 million in liability insurance per installation will be required.
VEHICLES
Vehicles used for installation may enter the forest area where Art Grant will be installed for drop off and pick up purposes only. The forest is a small space and cannot accommodate excess vehicles for extended periods of time. Vehicles will not be able to enter the forest after Thursday, July 11 at noon.
CAMPING
Art Grant presenters receive an Early Entry ticket which includes General Admission camping in Campground A, or Art Grant Camping (located on the festival side of the river). Please note we do not allow crew to camp beside their installations. Art Grant Camping is no more than a 5-minute walk away from your installation.
LIGHTING AND TOOLS
You are responsible for the setup, tear down and upkeep of your installation throughout the festival. You must ensure your installation is illuminated for viewing at night. We will not be providing you with any tools, lifts, ladders equipment or hardware.
POWER
Power will be allocated on an individual basis depending on the needs of each installation. Bass Coast does not provide power for tools during set-up. If you require more power for set up than your own battery powered tools, please note in your application. You are responsible for bringing your own power bar(s) and extension cord(s) to plug into site power for the duration of the festival.
SUSTAINABILITY
All practitioners must use environmentally friendly packaging products. We encourage all practitioners to source products locally whenever possible.

CULTURAL APPROPRIATION
Please take on the responsibility to do your own research and educate yourself on this issue. When choosing clothing and stylings for Bass Coast and anytime, ask the questions:
- Does this item hold traditional significance to a community or culture?
- Is the item intended to express religious beliefs or political statements?
- Does the item designate respect and or status within that culture?
If the answer is yes to any of the above (or if you don’t know), we ask you to reconsider producing it. Bass Coast’s harm reduction strategy includes a commitment to providing a culturally safe environment for the whole community. A culture of mutual respect is a fundamental part of the Bass Coast experience. Even if you think that your specific use of a culturally significant piece of art, clothing or makeup is respectful, other community members may find it insensitive or upsetting. We ask that you avoid creating, selling or wearing these items at Bass Coast in order to maintain a welcoming and comfortable environment for all festival attendees.

COVID-19 GUIDELINES
The health and safety of our attendees and the community that hosts us is of utmost importance. Bass Coast Festival will continue to operate in accordance with local health guidelines.
RELEASE OF LIABILITY
Bass Coast is not responsible for any damage, theft, vandalism or any other incident regarding your installation, tools or property. You are completely responsible for your installation and property on site.
